Load Rating Comes First

Every platform is rated for a duty class, and the classes are not suggestions. Light duty carries roughly 25 pounds per square foot, which covers workers and hand tools. Medium duty runs about 50 psf and suits plasterers and painters staging small quantities of material. Heavy duty sits near 75 psf and is what masons need when a bay is holding block, brick and mortar at the same time. Supported Scaffolding, the System Most Crews Rent

It is stable, it is understood by every crew, and it is the cheapest way to put people at height for weeks at a stretch. There are three families worth knowing.

Frame Scaffolding

Frame scaffolding, sometimes called H frame or fabricated frame, is the blue or yellow welded steel most people picture. Standard frames come in 5 ft by 5 ft and 5 ft by 6 ft 4 in, with bays running 7 ft or 10 ft long. Two frames, two cross braces and a pair of planks give you a bay in about four minutes once the crew has a rhythm.

Where it wins: straight runs on flat ground. Residential siding, stucco, block walls, soffit and fascia work. It is light, it stacks in a pickup box, and any labourer can be taught to assemble it correctly in an afternoon.

Where it falls down: anything curved, stepped or irregular. Frame scaffolding has no adjustability in its bay dimensions, so bay windows, chimney chases and setbacks force you into awkward workarounds with outriggers and hop up brackets.

System Scaffolding: Ringlock and Cuplock

System scaffolding uses vertical standards with fixed connection points every 500 mm and ledgers that lock in with a wedge or a cup. Ringlock rosettes accept up to eight connections at each node, which means you can run ledgers off at angles and wrap round or irregular structures without a single clamp.

Where it wins: tall builds, industrial work, anything over 40 feet, and any structure that is not a flat rectangle. Load capacity is significantly higher than frame, and a properly erected Ringlock tower is noticeably more rigid underfoot, which matters when your crew is trowelling all day.

Tube and Clamp Scaffolding

Tube and clamp is raw steel tube joined by swivel and right angle couplers, and it is the most adaptable of the types of scaffolding used in construction. There are no fixed dimensions at all, so it will conform to a staircase, a sloped roof, a tank, or the inside of a heritage church.

Where it wins: geometry that defeats everything else. Restoration work on older Toronto buildings leans on it heavily.

Where it falls down: labour. Every joint is a separate coupler torqued by hand, so erection takes two to three times longer than system scaffolding, and it demands an experienced erector. Get the coupler torque wrong and the whole assumption of stability goes with it.

Mobile Towers and Rolling Scaffolds

Mobile towers are supported scaffolds on locking casters, built for work that moves along a wall rather than staying in one bay. Drywall finishing, electrical rough in, duct hanging, ceiling grid and interior painting all run faster on a rolling tower than on anything you have to dismantle and rebuild every twelve feet.

The rules are simple and people break them constantly. Never ride a rolling tower while it is being moved unless the equipment and the surface specifically permit it. Lock every caster before anyone climbs. Keep the height to base ratio conservative, and add outriggers rather than guessing. The regulation is the minimum, and the daily habits are what keep people upright. Before every shift, walk the run and check the following.

  • Base plates and mudsills bearing evenly, with no rocking and no washed out fill under a leg
  • Every frame plumb and level, verified with a level rather than by eye
  • Cross braces fully pinned, with locking pins engaged and not substituted with rebar or wire
  • Planks fully decked, overlapping correctly at supports, with no split, oil soaked or previously overloaded boards
  • Guardrails, mid rails and toe boards in place on every platform above 2.4 m
